Problem:
Fables and stories were once taught and served a purpose to teach children and even older adults lessons in life. Over time they have been erased and changed into different stories with unachievable perfect endings. Life is not always planned, yet parents are shielding children from problems around the world, afraid that they are too young to learn about the dangers. It is best to teach them at a younger age, so that they develop an understanding between what is right and wrong. Without it, it creates hesitation, uncertainty, naiveness, anxiety and a lot more negative factors. There should and needs to be a way to bring back these old stories to teach the lessons they were once made to teach. The book also helps parents understand that it is okay to expose children to these horrors, so they are prepared for the world as they grow up.
By using old 1800s illustrations as inspiration, I created patterns made from parts of the illustration. Each pattern and color palette corresponds to a three and a half-inch miniature accordion book with an important story in each. There are six books with a theme of the characters’ story that includes Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, and The Little Mermaid. Each version is based off of the Grimm Brothers story from the early 1800s. These books teach parents about the true endings of each story. Each folded, glued and assembled by hand.

Using similar inspiration from the same time period I created charcoal drawings with fairytale themes, scanned them and edited using blending modes in Photoshop. Each page is 8.5x11 with textured paper and illuminated decorations on each page it gives the feeling of a fairytale but with serious topics included. This book includes content about values that are important for parents. This will help parents understand the importance of values and how to teach children about them. This is a foundation for parents to help educate and develop their children’s brains as they grow into full adults.
